Dental tomograph in Wroclaw – how does the examination proceed?
A CT scan of the jaw does not require any preparation from the patient. Only jewelry, ornaments and metal objects must be removed from the head and neck area. The examination is safe and involves a negligible dose of radiation (similar to that received from the environment during the day).
The patient walks up to the CT scanner and places his head in the indicated area, while simultaneously inserting a special bite between his teeth. He must remain still for a few seconds, during which time the camera will make a rotation around the area to be examined. The entire procedure is painless and does not involve any discomfort. What is cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of the upper and lower jaw, and when is this examination performed?
CBCT is a high-precision three-dimensional tomography that allows for accurate assessment of bones, teeth, nerve canals, and periodontal structures. It is performed prior to implant, orthodontic, or surgical treatment, when inflammatory changes, cysts, or injuries are suspected, or when standard X-rays do not provide sufficient information.
How does CBCT differ from a regular X-ray?
An X-ray shows a two-dimensional image, while CBCT creates an accurate 3D model that allows structures to be assessed from all sides. CBCT reveals changes that are not visible on a pantomogram and allows for precise treatment planning.
How long does a CBCT scan of the upper and lower jaw take?
The scan itself takes about 10–20 seconds. The entire visit, including preparation and recording of the examination, usually takes a few minutes.
Do I need a referral to have a CT scan?
No. The test can be performed without a referral – all you need is an appointment. If you have a referral from your doctor, it is worth bringing it with you so that the scope of the test can be adjusted accordingly.
Can CBCT be performed on children?
Yes, if there are clear diagnostic indications. The lowest possible radiation dose is used and the examination area is selected appropriately.
Is tomography safe during pregnancy?
Radiological examinations during pregnancy are performed only when absolutely necessary. As a rule, CBCT is not recommended for pregnant women, unless the doctor decides otherwise due to important medical indications.
