Tooth root extraction – what does it involve?
Human teeth are made up of three parts: the crown, the tooth neck and the root. The crown of the tooth is located above the gum, and the root is the part that holds the tooth in the alveolus. When the crown of a tooth ceases to exist – this can happen as a result of damage or bacterial disease (decay) – the root no longer serves its function, which is an indication for its removal.
Tooth root extraction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the root by a dentist. This is usually done when pathological changes develop within the root, such as infection or inflammation, which can negatively affect the functioning of the entire body. Indications for extracting the root of a tooth include:
- caries
- abscess, or purulent inflammation
- periapical tissue inflammation
- gingivitis
- necrosis of the tooth root
Is tooth root extraction painful?
Tooth root extraction is a procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. Thanks to this solution, the patient does not feel any pain. This allows precise removal of the root and reduces discomfort and stress before the procedure itself. Pulling the root of a tooth is a procedure that poses no health risks.
General anesthesia is used when local anesthesia is not sufficient or the patient experiences increased anxiety before the procedure. Anesthesia is also used for tooth root extraction in children and people with disabilities. The procedure looks very similar to that for adult patients. At Dentaxo dental clinic in Wroclaw, we always make sure that you feel safe and comfortable during the procedure.
Surgical removal of a tooth root in Wroclaw – how does the procedure proceed?
First, an X-ray imaging picture should be taken to see how deep the tooth root is embedded. When access to the root is difficult, a dental surgeon should perform the procedure, as tooth root extraction will require an incision on the gum and the placement of sutures.
Local anesthesia is then applied to make the procedure painless – you may, however, feel a slight pressure during the tooth root extraction, but it will not cause pain. The dental surgeon, using surgical instruments, will pull the tooth root out of the socket and remove it.
Surgical extraction of the tooth root requires the placement of sutures, which are usually removed after 7-14 days. Dental tampons are used to stop the bleeding, which should be chewed by the patient for 30 minutes after the procedure.

After the procedure, follow the recommendations below to avoid complications:
- Do not eat or drink beverages for 2 hours after the tooth extraction procedure.
- For the next few days, do not eat hot and spicy foods or heavy foods that require intense chewing.
- Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
- If you are experiencing pain, use painkillers.
- Avoid mouthwash and hard-bristled toothbrushes.
- In case of bleeding, swelling, fever and severe pain, contact your doctor immediately!

FAQ
What is frenulum cutting?
Frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure involving the correction of a short or abnormally attached frenulum of the lip or tongue. The aim of the procedure is to improve mobility, comfort when speaking and swallowing, and to prevent orthodontic and periodontal problems.
When is it advisable to perform a frenulum cut?
The procedure is recommended when the frenulum causes gum tension, recession, diastema, difficulty speaking, limited tongue movement, or problems with maintaining hygiene. In children, the decision is often made in consultation with a speech therapist or orthodontist.
Does cutting the frenulum hurt?
No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is well tolerated by both children and adults. After the procedure, there may be slight tenderness, which quickly subsides.
How long does it take for the frenulum to heal after it has been cut?
The healing process usually takes several days. During this time, it is recommended to follow your doctor’s instructions and, in some cases, perform simple exercises to prevent contracture recurrence.
How much does frenulum cutting cost?
The price of frenulum trimming at Dentaxo is PLN 600 and includes the procedure and post-operative check-up.
