At Dentaxo Clinic in Wroclaw, we perform a pantomogram, or panoramic dental radiograph. It is an X-ray imaging with a wide diagnostic field, which allows to take a picture of the entire upper jaw and mandible (lower jaw) in one examination.
The examination takes several seconds, is completely painless and safe. Since we perform it on modern equipment, the radiation dose is negligible (no higher than what humans take in from the environment on a daily basis).
Pantomogram allows for a quick diagnosis of the entire dentition – it shows all teeth (including their canals and other structures), the mandible, maxilla, as well as the temporomandibular joints.

A pantomogram is one of the basic examinations before root canal treatment, conservative treatment and before other forms of dental treatment. It is also recommended to periodically take a panoramic photo of the teeth for preventive purposes – this allows you to diagnose inflammation and other oral diseases, including caries. The examination also shows the direction of tooth eruption, so it can be useful in controlling the development of the teeth in children and before the extraction of eights.
A pantomographic radiograph usually covers the entire jaw, but the treatment area can be reduced if one or more teeth are examined.
When to perform a pantomogram?
We perform panoramic dental radiographs in Wroclaw to assess the condition of the oral cavity and before dental treatment of various types. The most common indications are:
- diagnosis of diseases and conditions in the maxilla and mandible,
- periodontal disease (gum disease),
- root canal treatment, especially involving several teeth,
- complex tooth extractions, removal of eights,

- diagnosing and treating injuries to the jaw or face,
- evaluating the condition of teeth prior to craniofacial procedures, such as ENT,

CT of the temporomandibular joints is sometimes also recommended before prosthetic or orthodontic treatment – in situations where extensive bite modification is planned.
How does the pantomogram proceed? How do you prepare yourself?
The pantomogram does not require any preparation from the patient. All you have to do is put your face to the camera and put a soft bite into your mouth. You must remain still during the examination (for a few seconds). An X-ray is available immediately after the examination. As a result, treatment – for example, root canal treatment – can be started at the very first visit, having been diagnosed in the X-ray. This increases the precision of the examination, and minimizes the risk of re-exposure. Thanks to pulsed projection, the exposure is as short as possible (it takes a few seconds), and the exposure field can be modeled as desired, thus avoiding, for example, eye exposure in children.
