What is cephalometry?
Cephalometric examination is an X-ray imaging that is performed in orthodontic diagnosis. Facial tissues, teeth and cranial bones are x-rayed, allowing a precise picture of the indicated area. Based on the examination, the orthodontist determines:
- the causes of malocclusion,
- bone age,
- the condition of the hard and soft tissues of the face,
- other pathological changes in the craniofacial region.
Cephalometric radiograph as a basis for orthodontic diagnosis
Cephalometric X-ray is a basic examination used in orthodontics, which deals with the problems of malocclusion, maxillofacial defects and correction of dental abnormalities. Precise cephalometric imaging allows to plan orthodontic treatment, control its course, as well as evaluate the results.
Cephalometry allows us to determine the anatomical causes of malocclusion, that is, any abnormalities in the structure and function of the teeth. These defects can alter facial features and affect their aesthetics, as well as impede oral activities such as chewing and swallowing food, speaking, and breathing. Using the cephalometric photo, the doctor decides whether to start treatment with braces, which usually lasts from 1.5 to 3 years. The cephalometric examination is usually repeated after or during treatment to assess progress or make needed changes.
Cephalometric examination is also used in ENT diagnostics to assess the condition of the paranasal sinuses and in reconstructive and implant surgery.
Cephalometric X-ray in Wroclaw – what does the examination look like and how to prepare for it?
Taking a cephalometric picture is painless and usually takes a few minutes. The examination requires no prior preparation, the patient does not need to be fasting. Before the examination, jewelry and metal items from the face and neck area, such as earrings, piercings or glasses, should be removed, as their presence reduces image quality. Those using metal prostheses should report this fact before the examination begins.
During the examination, the patient should remain motionless and follow the instructions of the medical staff. The cephalometric radiograph is taken in a standing position, and the patient’s head is immobilized with special attachments to stabilize it as much as possible.
The cephalometric x-ray is a health-safe examination. The dose of X-ray radiation is small, and the examination itself takes a very short time. At Dentaxo in Wroclaw, we use modern equipment, thanks to which the examination is non-invasive and can also be performed in children.
The main contraindication for cephalometric examination is pregnancy! The examination can be performed exceptionally after prior consultation with a gynecologist, when it is medically justified. This fact must be reported before the examination!

FAQ
When is cephalometry performed?
Cephalometry is mainly performed before orthodontic treatment begins. It helps to assess the relationship between the upper jaw, lower jaw, and skull, as well as to plan tooth movements and bone growth direction in children and adolescents.
How does cephalometry differ from a pantomogram?
A pantomogram shows a general two-dimensional image of all teeth. Cephalometry, on the other hand, provides a lateral image of the skull and is used for precise analysis of the facial skeleton, bite, and proportions—it is essential in planning orthodontic treatment.
How long does cephalometry take?
The scan itself takes only a few seconds. The entire visit, including preparation and recording of the results, usually takes 2–3 minutes.
What types of malocclusion can be assessed using cephalometry?
Cephalometry allows for the assessment of, among other things, overbite, underbite, open bite, deep bite, and facial asymmetry. The examination also enables the analysis of bone growth and assessment of whether the defect is dental or skeletal in nature.
