Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of root canals – the structures leading from the inside of the zкba aї to the koњci in the jaw and jaw. The inside of a tooth – its chamber and roots – is filled with pulp, a highly innervated and vascularized tissue. If the pulp becomes infected as a result of decay or damage to the tooth, inflammation develops within. Then the only treatment options are endodontic treatment or extraction (removal of the tooth).
During treatment, the endodontist’s task is to remove infected tissue from the root canals. This requires a great deal of precision and skill, as the canals are very thin structures, often with curves and branches. For successful treatment, it is necessary to remove all the pulp, from all parts of the root, followed by disinfection and tight filling of the canal with a special material.
Root canal treatment is indicated in any situation where the tooth pulp has become infected. This is usually the result of advanced decay or mechanical damage (such as a fracture) to the tooth.
